DEMARA DISTILLERS Ltd, sole producer of Demerara rum and owner of the world's largest stock of old rums.
To celebrate the event, Yesu Persaud, president of Demerara Distillers, allowed Luca Gargano to select some barrels jealously guarded in the company's "Paradis": Luca Gargano was able to fulfill a dream by taking possession of the oldest barrel in the warehouses.
This 1999 Diamond and Port Mourant demerara rum is an experimental rum, i.e. a fusion of Diamond and Port Mourant made at birth, i.e. before filling the barrels.
For this second edition of the Diamond and Port Mourant 1999 demerara rum, only 4 barrels were made available to be precise.
Distilled in 1999, it was bottled, after the loss of more than 72% of the product, it was bottled full proof in 2014 in just 1148 bottles in a hot month of July.
The Diamond and Port Mourant 1999 demerara rum was aged under the tropics, as usual.
Tasting Notes:
Color: very dark amber.
Nose: like an old El Dorado, only with more strength and less caramel. This means that it's not very phenolic rum, and that I'm finding quite a bit some toasted oak, cake, mocha, bananas and dried figs, coffee beans.
In a way, Diamond and Port Mourant 1999 demerara rum is quite delicate, despite the lethal force.
Two "Angel's Tears" of water dilute its power, opening it up even to less accustomed palates.
Mouth: heavier, fatter, extremely concentrated, with some incense, pink jelly, bitter oranges.
Finish: long, minty, rich, honey.
