In 1918, Masataka Taketsuru embarked alone to embark on a long journey to Scotland.

In this remote land the secrets of whiskey making were taught to this young Japanese man, who in Scotland also met the woman who would become his wife.

Masataka Taketsuru was born in the coastal town of Takehara (then known as Takehara City) about 60 km from the city of Hirosima.

The Taketsuru family owned a distillery of "Sake" (rice liqueur) from 1733 (which continues to process this drink to this day).

Sake making is a fine art, for which Masataka studied up to graduate in Chemistry at the University, in order to prepare to run the family business.

Despite this, the Scotch Whiskey captured the young man's imagination, who decided to dedicate his life to this liqueur. Having the opportunity to go to Scotland, Masataka enrolled at the University of Glasgow, becoming the first Japanese to study the art of whiskey making.

He took chemistry classes at university, learning in the field to distill in distilleries, observing workers, receiving training as a blender.

At the end of his studies, Masataka finally managed to reach the degree of Master Blender.

In 1920 Masataka returned to Japan, in the company of Jessie Roberta (Rita), with whom he had married a year earlier. After arriving at his company, he set out to develop a genuine whiskey, which eventually led to the birth of the first Japanese Whiskey. Masataka's vision was formed thanks to his experience of him in Scotland: he immediately understood that an optimal environment was essential to produce a good whiskey.

In 1934, Masataka founded Nikka Whiskey, building his first distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaido, which despite its inexpensive location is the best place to make Japanese Whiskey, as it was similar to many Scottish towns where he had studied.

For decades, his company has been developing and creating whiskey in Japan, while maintaining his passion for quality.
