    • The whisky has been partially matured in casks that originally held grand cru Banyuls, a sweet yellow wine from the south of France

    • It is a stout whisky - hearted, as confirmed by its taste - rich yet arresting, punchy, cantankerous.

    • Being a "Single Cask", each bottling comes from a single cask and the bottles are often numbered, with limited runs

Uberach Alsace Single Cask whisky is a product of the Distillerie Bertrand, located in Uberach, Alsace, France.

The Bertrand distillery, founded by Joseph Bertrand in 1874, is historically renowned for its fruit eaux-de-vie, but has only been producing whisky since 2003 (or 2012, depending on the source).

It is located 30 km north of Strasbourg, in the town of Uberach.

Uberach Single Cask (distilled 2008, bottled 2017): Aged for a minimum of 6 years in ex-Banyuls French oak casks.

A distinguishing feature of Uberach whiskies is the use of malted barley, sometimes organic and/or lightly peated.

Maturation often takes place in French oak casks that have previously held Banyuls "Reserve" wines (a fortified sweet wine from the south of France), or other wines such as Vin Jaune, Rasteau, or Cognac casks. This gives the whisky a unique flavour profile.

As a "Single Cask", each bottling comes from a single cask and the bottles are often numbered, with limited runs (for example, only 300 bottles of a particular bottling).

The age of the whisky can vary; expressions aged 5, 6, 9 years or even older (such as an 18 year old) can be found.

Tasting Characteristics (Example based on a specific Single Cask release):

The water is sourced from the mountains of Les Vosges , the malt is locally sourced .

The whisky has been partially matured in casks that originally held Banyuls grand crus , a sweet yellow wine from the south of France .

In general, Uberach Single Cask whiskies are appreciated for their strength, personality and complex flavour profile, often influenced by maturation in fortified or specialty wine casks.

They are considered "bold" whiskies with a punchy, cantankerous character by some tasters.

It is important to note that, being "Single Cask", the specific characteristics may vary slightly from bottling to bottling due to the single cask source.

    Tasting Notes:

Colour: Light amber with orange highlights.

Nose: Notes of cherries, pears, candied fruit, mulled wine, walnuts, hazelnuts and a hint of chocolate. Aromas of toast, leather, cloves, cardamom and white tobacco may also emerge. Some versions may feature notes of gingerbread, candied bitter orange, crème brûlée.

Palate: A dry sweetness that brings licorice and cocoa. It is described as smooth and broad, with flavors of toasted caramel, walnuts and cooked peaches. A spicy note of cloves, vanilla and pepper may round out the profile. Some versions have a balance of fruit, spice and good structure on the palate.

Finish: Pleasantly fruity, with a persistence that can recall the character of a good aged grappa or eaux-de-vie in some expressions.

Uberach Alsace Single Cask is a stout whisky - hearted, as confirmed by its taste - rich yet arresting, incisive, irascible.
