Shizuoka Pot Still K is a fantastic new whiskey that seems to follow its popular predecessor, Prologue K, in true Karuizawa style.
The Pot Still K single malt is produced in 2016 with the ex-Karuizawa pot still and aged for three years in ex-bourbon first-fill cask.
The distillery is one of the fastest rising stars in Japanese whiskey.
His initial claim to fame was the purchase of the former Karuizawa stills.
They've since proven it wasn't just a gimmick.
One of their latest releases is the Shizuoka Pot Still K, this Japanese single malt is considered among the best single malt whiskeys in the world.
The distillery is located high in the Japanese mountains in Shizuoka's Tamagawa district, not far from Mount Fuji.
The architecture is modern, and Taiko Nakamura, founder of Shizuoka and president of Gaia Flow, has gone to great lengths to make the distillery stand out in multiple ways.
Not only the appearance of the building, but also in terms of Shizuoka production.
Shizuoka Pot Still K is entirely distilled in the old Karuizawa alembic where only Japanese barley is used for the production of this whisky.
Something we find extremely special as Japanese whiskey is generally only made from imported European barley.
Very few bottles of this whiskey produced with only Japanese malt have been released, it is a first edition much sought after by single malt whiskey collectors.
Tasting Notes:
Color: gold, straw.
Perfumes: the nose is mostly floral and fruity with tones of citrus, vanilla and tree resin. Very rich without getting too sharp.
Taste: The palate experiences rich malts, limes and freshly whipped cream with honey and ripe melons.
In the finish: soft sweetness mixed with oak wood that lingers for a long time.
We recommend pairing Shizuoka Pot Still K Japanese single malt whiskey with an excellent Arturo Fuente reserve cigar.
