Karuizawa Vintages 1999-2000 Sherry Cask – LMDW Cellar Book

Karuizawa Vintages 1999-2000 Sherry Cask is a true gem in the Japanese whisky scene, produced by one of the most legendary and sought-after distilleries in the world. This bottling, selected by La Maison du Whisky for its prestigious Cellar Book series, represents the excellence of the distilling art of Karuizawa, a distillery now closed but whose name continues to evoke quality, rarity and timeless appeal.

Founded in 1955 at the foot of Mount Asama, Karuizawa distillery was known for its small-scale production, the use of malted barley imported from Scotland and the maturation in sherry casks, which gave its whiskies an intense and complex profile. Since its final closure in 2000, Karuizawa whiskies have become cult objects among collectors and connoisseurs, with bottles reaching record prices at international auctions.

Karuizawa Vintages 1999-2000 Sherry Cask fully expresses the distillery's style, characterised by a deep, rich and enveloping aromatic profile.

The long maturation in sherry casks gives notes of dark fruit, dark chocolate, sweet spices and toasted wood, while the structured body and exceptional length provide an extraordinary tasting experience.

Limited edition of 324 bottles and distributed exclusively by LMDW.

    Tasting Notes:

    Colour: dark coppery amber.

Nose: A floral peated Japanese single malt whisky, Karuizawa 1999 & 2000 has been matured in sherry casks, with the two vintages married to create the perfect balance of rich peat and light fruit. Rich and aromatic, the nose initially reveals plums, blackberries, dark chocolate and dried fruit, before aromas of peony, geranium, citrus and ginger develop.

Palate: The palate offers notes of pepper, ginger, star anise, tropical fruit and floral honey, which mix with heavy waves of rich, flavourful peat smoke. Delicate floral aromas develop, which linger on the finish alongside red berries and earthy, savoury notes.
