Lidia and Romano Levi’s grappas are collectible grappas and the label of this bottle of Levi straw-colored grappa was handcrafted by Romano personally, present in the distillery archives and is now reproduced for the 2019-2023 edition.
The label decorated with a woman’s face with braids with flowers and a spiral body.
It is often a mistake, when talking about grappas, to only think of Romano.
They should be called GRAPPA DI LIDIA E ROMANO LEVI, both because the distillery was the undivided inheritance of the brothers, and because Lidia, on the first floor of the house where she had isolated herself leading an almost monastic life, selected and created the very rare bottles of herbal grappa.
Lidia was Romano's older sister, an exceptional, protective, severe and cautious woman; Romano speaks of her in an interview as follows:
"....for me (her presence) has been very beneficial because I certainly wouldn't be here at this point ... yes, she is severe with me too and therefore has been very useful to me in my work. She also works to make the herbs that are works of art in the bottles. For me, she has been very useful."
But it is Romano who owes the great fame gained by his bottles of grappa for the hand-written labels and then enriched with poetic phrases or naive drawings, those little masterpieces that today we define as "WILD ART".
The distillery was built by Serafino Levi and was equipped, then as now, with a direct-fire still, as we learn from one of the rare interviews given by his son Romano in 1991, where a few expert craftsmen work, defined by Romano himself as “ignorant”… because they are unaware of the danger they run as live-fire distillers can explode.
To use a live-fire distiller requires great expertise and skill, but this procedure perfected by Romano Levi and still strictly respected today, guarantees the perfect maintenance of all the aromatic components, crucial for the organoleptic characteristics of the Grappa.
Here we propose a bottle of Levi Romano grappa della donna selvaggia Paglierina.
This bottle of grappa with a hand-drawn label produced by Romano Levi, is a rarity.
For this Paglierina grappa from the Levi Romano distillery, pomace of Nebbiolo from Barbaresco DOCG, Dolcetto d’Alba DOC and Barbera d’Alba DOC are used.
The Paglierina grappa of the wild woman then ages for about four years.
Thus was born the straw grappa with a bunch of grapes on the label signed by Romano Levi.
Grappa as tradition wants 45 degrees!
The straw grappa of the Serafino Romano Distillery has an indomitable strength that warms the heart and a label that is a work of art!
