Discover Umeshu: the Delicious Japanese Plum Liqueur
Anyone who has visited Kyoto, Japan, cannot have missed tasting Umeshu, a delicious liquor made from Japanese plums.
This liquor has a light scent and a sweet taste, which make it unique in the panorama of Japanese alcoholic beverages.
Umeshu is based on ume, a particular variety of Japanese plum, infused in alcohol for over two years.
This long infusion process allows the fragrance and natural acidity of the fruit to be extracted, giving life to an extraordinary liquor.
Furthermore, it is enriched with aromatic extracts of shiso, an oriental plant similar to basil, characterized by a unique scent reminiscent of anise, lemon balm, cinnamon and citrus fruits.
The Choya range of liqueurs comes from Japan, a land rich in ancient culture, where the strong contrast between modernity and tradition is reflected in its products.
The prestigious ume-based liqueurs are born from the ancient Japanese tradition. The plums, harvested when they are still unripe, are exposed to the sun for a period ranging from six months to a year, with the addition of salt, before being infused in alcohol and crystallized cane sugar.
Choya Extra Shiso is a red liqueur, obtained thanks to the infusion of ume in alcohol for a period of between 2 and 3 years, together with red shiso (Japanese red basil).
This process allows the natural acidity and fragrance of the plums to be extracted, before adding the crystallized cane sugar.
