This wooden calabash pipe with silver ferrule and flock offers an excellent smoking experience thanks to its high-quality blocky meerschaum bowl, mounted on a body made from African Okoumé wood (Aucoumea Klaineana).

As you may know, Okoumé wood became famous with the disappearance of the true African calabash.

Calabash gourds (usually with meerschaum or porcelain bowls inside) have always made fine pipes, but they are labor-intensive and, today, quite expensive.

Because of this cost, pipes with wooden bodies instead of gourd bodies, but with the same classic shape, are sold as calabashes.

Both wooden and gourd pipes are functionally identical (with the notable exception that dried gourd, usually significantly lighter, is more comfortable to hold).

Although slightly heavier than gourd, okoumé wood offers the same smoking quality as its competitors.

They consist of a descending curve that ends with an ascending curve where the bowl is located.

Below the bowl is an air chamber that serves to cool, dry, and sweeten the smoke.

This type of calabash pipe was typically paired with a pressed ceramic bowl rather than the bowl of a block-shaped meerschaum pipe.

The use of block-shaped meerschaum bowls for calabash pipes makes a huge difference in every respect.

Block Meerschaum helps tobacco burn at lower temperatures, is very lightweight, has much better resistance to excessive heat, and has good coloring behavior (by the way, the fake one never colors).

The main reason a calabash pipe is so good to smoke is that it has a large chamber just below the bowl, which is the most important part for keeping the smoke cool and dry.

The smoke becomes even cooler and drier as it travels down the long stem.
