Arran 15 Years Old Rare Batch Peated - Sherry Butts: The Seductive "Dark Side" of the Island.
If the classic Arran is an ode to fresh fruit and summer breezes, and the French Oak edition is an elegant gala dinner, the Arran 15 Years Old Rare Batch Peated - Sherry Butts is a stormy night spent in front of a roaring fire in an old Scottish cottage.
This limited edition represents a wonderful anomaly in Lochranza's production.
Arran's profile is typically unpeated, but for a few weeks each year, the distillery produces a peated spirit (commonly known as Machrie Moor).
Aging this smoky spirit for 15 years in ex-Sherry casks (Sherry Butts) creates a combination that many enthusiasts consider the "Holy Grail" of Scotch whisky.
The Magic of Contrast: Smoke and Sweetness.
Why is this bottle so special?
Because it plays on the most beloved contrast in the world of Single Malts: the marriage of the earthy, smoky character of peat and the opulent, fruity richness of sherry.
It's not an easy balance to achieve. If the peat is too strong, it overwhelms the wine.
If the sherry is too sweet, it puts out the fire. But after 15 years of resting in the island's warehouses, a perfect fusion has occurred.
The large casks (butts) allowed for slow maturation, smoothing the peat's edges and transforming the acrid smoke into a sweet, aromatic ember.
The Arran 15 Y.O. Peated Sherry Butts is a whisky for those who enjoy strong emotions.
It's ideal for lovers of great classic peated sherry blends (old Ardbeg or Laphroaig sherry casks, or Glendronach peated), but with the unmistakable Arran artisanal signature.
As a "Rare Batch," it's a testament to how the spirit of Arran can age beautifully even when cloaked in smoke.
It's the perfect winter dram, to be sipped slowly on a chilly evening, perhaps accompanied by a piece of 90% dark chocolate or a medium-bodied cigar.
In summary: A masterpiece of balance between brute force and sweet elegance. A must-have for collectors and the most discerning drinkers.
Tasting Notes
Prepare yourself for a robust and full sensory experience. This is not a shy whisky.
Appearance: Dark mahogany, intense and deep. The color immediately betrays the heavy influence of the Sherry casks.
On the Nose: The first impression is disorienting and magnificent. It's not the medicinal peat of Islay, but an earthier smoke, like that of a bonfire of wet wood and dry leaves. Immediately after, the sweetness of the Sherry emerges: sultanas, dried figs, dates, and a hint of dark chocolate. There's also a hint of old leather and Christmas spices.
On the Palate: It's oily, dense, and chewy on the palate. It's a flavor explosion. The peat envelops the palate, but is immediately balanced by an explosion of red fruit in spirits and berry jam. Notes of pipe tobacco, black pepper, cloves, and candied orange follow one another. It's a meaty and satisfying sip.
Finish: Very long and warm. The smoke lingers, turning into sweet ash, accompanied by notes of bitter cocoa and a hint of sea salt reminiscent of its island origins.
