Bidirectional Humidifiers
All cigar aficionados experience humidity problems, problems maintaining humidity in cigar boxes, and mold growth.
How can you solve problems related to maintaining humidity in cigar boxes?
How, when, and with what should you replace humidifying sponges in cigar boxes?
How can you eliminate mold and unpleasant odors from cigars?
A bidirectional humidity control humidifier is the solution to all these problems.
Truemidity and Boveda are well-known brands that produce bidirectional humidity control sachets.
Simply put, they are small, smart sachets that maintain a constant and precise humidity level inside sealed containers, cigar boxes, pocket cigar cases, and jars.
The magic of Truemidity and Boveda lies in the term "bidirectional": they don't just absorb excess humidity, they also release it if the environment is too dry.
Inside each sachet is a saturated solution of water and natural salts, enclosed in a permeable membrane that allows only water vapor to pass through.
A percentage is printed on the sachet (for example, 62%, 69%, 72%): this number indicates the exact relative humidity level that the sachet will attempt to stabilize in the container.
There's no need to open or refill them: they simply fit into the container as is.
Initially, the sachet is soft to the touch. When its charge is exhausted, the internal solution crystallizes, becoming completely rigid and hard.
That's the signal that it's time to replace it (they generally last a few months to a year, depending on how often the container is opened).
Main areas of use:
This system is used wherever humidity stability is vital to preserving the quality of a product:
Cigars: This is the historical use. Cigar humidors typically use a humidity level between 65% and 72% to prevent cigars from drying out or molding.
Hemp and inflorescences: Widely used for curing and preserving, usually at 58% or 62%, to preserve the terpenes (the aromas) and resin, and to prevent the product from drying out.
Wooden musical instruments: Guitars or violins are susceptible to changes in humidity (the wood can crack or warp). Special Boveda bags (often 49%) are available to insert into the case.
Food and collectibles: For storing dried food, spices, or old paper documents.
