List of products by brand Caol Ila Distillery

The Caol Ila distillery is the largest on the island of Islay, with over 3 and a half million liters of which only a small part becomes single malt, around 5%, while the rest is an essential component for the great Bell blends , White Horse, Johnnie Walker and Black Bottle to which it gives salty notes.

Situated in a stunning setting on the coast of the Sound of Islay, Caol Ila distillery is a true gem of the art of distilling.

Founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson, this historic distillery takes its name from the Gaelic "Sound of Islay", the stretch of sea that separates the island of Islay from nearby Jura.

Caol Ila's strategic location, near Port Askaig, allows it to exploit the highest quality natural ingredients, such as the purest water from Loch Nam Ban and malted barley from Port Ellen, essential for the production of an exceptional single malt scotch whisky.

The distillery's history is full of changes and transfers of ownership.

From 1854, when Norman Buchanan bought it, until 1920, Caol Ila saw a succession of owners, including Bulloch Lade & Company and a group of businessmen who founded the "Caol Ila Distillery Company Ltd".

From 1930, the distillery passed under the control of Scottish Malt Distilleries and, today, it is part of the well-known multinational group Diageo.

Despite numerous transitions, the continuity of production at Caol Ila has always been guaranteed, with the sole exception of an interruption between 1930 and 1937, caused by the crisis of prohibition in the United States.

In the 1970s, with the reinvigorated interest in Islay whiskies, the distillery underwent a substantial renovation in 1972.

This intervention led to the construction of the production facilities from scratch, increasing the number of stills from two to six.

Handcrafted, these new stills retain the shapes of the originals, ensuring the whisky’s distinctive qualities and characteristics are preserved.

Today, Caol Ila is renowned for its distinctive single malts, which reflect the unique terroir of Islay.

The distillery continues to produce a high-quality whisky, celebrated for its smoky flavours and marine notes, making it an essential symbol of Scottish whisky-making tradition.
