Glengyle Distillery: Campbeltown Whisky History and Heritage

Glengyle Distillery is a historic distillery in Campbeltown, founded in 1872 by William Mitchell and completed in 1873.

William Mitchell was the former chairman of Springbank and previously a member of the Reichlachan distillery, before striking out on his own.

The distillery, officially known as Mitchell's Glengyle, was founded after a dispute with his brother John, with whom he worked at Springbank Distillery; their father, Archibald Mitchell, was the founder of Springbank.

The Distillery's Challenges and Renewal

In 1919, Glengyle Distillery faced serious difficulties due to the post-war economic crisis in the whisky industry, which led to the cessation of production in 1925. The remaining stock was sold, marking a critical stage in the distillery's history.

Over the next few years, Glengyle changed hands several times. In 1940, Maurice Bloch, who also ran the Glen Scotia distillery, saw his second attempt at revival fail during World War II, followed by an attempt by Campbell Henderson Ltd. in the 1950s.

Kilkerran: Glengyle Whisky

Kilkerran is the label under which whiskies produced by Glengyle Distillery are marketed. The choice to use the name Kilkerran was due to two main reasons: the name Glengyle was already in use for a Highland malt, and Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd was unable to acquire the rights to that name. Additionally, Kilkerran is derived from the Gaelic "Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain," the name of the original settlement where Saint Kerran had his religious cell.

The two distilleries, Glengyle and Springbank, border each other and are under the same ownership by Hedley Wright. Glengyle currently uses the Springbank malting floor and bottling facilities to produce Kilkerran, while the stills are owned by Glengyle.
