Ardbeg is the last of the famous distilleries on the south coast of Islay and, despite the great popularity among whiskey lovers, it has had a very troubled history especially in the last thirty years, in which it has changed several owners, produced very little distillate or is been closed at different times and for many years. For a few years, at the end of the 1980s, it was the twin distillery of nearby Laphroaig, with which it also shares its foundation year, and the staff shuttled to keep the process running. Founded in 1815 by John MacDougall, it has recently celebrated two centuries of life with some celebratory bottlings and above all the bottles distilled in the 70s are among the most sought after among collectors. From 1998 the rebirth started and Ardbeg has one of the most beautiful and well-kept visitor center, impeccably managed and where it is also possible to eat qualitatively.
