La Favorite is a family-owned and independent distillery, one of the last in Martinique.
Its agricultural rums are considered by experts to be among the best rums in the world .... pity that they are rare, very rare.
La Favorite is one of the last independent distilleries in Martinique with Neisson.
It was founded in 1842 on the remains of a sugar refinery called Les Jambettes before being renamed La Favorite in 1851.
In 1909, when Henri Dormoy purchased it, he made some improvements to transform the sugar refinery into a distillery.
After some twists and turns linked to the gambling mania of Albert Dormoy (Henri's son), La Favorite saw its activity cease in 1938.
Production resumed only when André, his younger brother, took over to completely renovate it in 1956.
Today La Favorite, under the careful guidance of Frank Dormoy, produces sugar cane on 60 hectares and also sources from small local producers, it still operates entirely using a steam engine built in 1906.
The sugar cane extraction system and the historic Creole column still are real museum pieces, but they are perhaps the secret of these rums with so much character and charm.
Vesou (cane wine), obtained from cane juice fermented for a long time (up to 72 hours), is distilled in 2 Creole columns, one of which is entirely made of copper and has been in operation since 1957 and the other more modern dating back to 1986.
From 600 thousand to 1 million liters of rum have been distilled every year for more than a century and a half.
