It was Sir John Gay Alleyne, at the request of John Sober, who directed the distillery, which is why it gained such fame and recognition that, after his death in 1801, on Sober's proposal, the name of Mount Gilboa was changed to Mount Gay resuming Sir John's middle name.

The history of Mount Gay in the 20th century was instead closely linked to that of the Ward family of St. Lucy, who owned it for a century and also owns the best sugar cane plantations on the island.
