It was in 1977 that the famous "Enogastronaut" Luigi Veronelli, fascinated by the quality of Rhum Barbancour, named it among the best rums in the world!
Société du Rhum Barbancourt, D. Gardère & Cie is one of the oldest distilleries in Haiti, a nation widely regarded as one of the best rum producers in the world.
The company was founded in 1736 by the Barbancourt family who emigrated specifically from Bordeaux, while the Distillery, designed and built on the Charentaise model of Cognac, was inaugurated in 1862.
The still with which the rum is distilled comes from the region of the famous French Brandy (a Pot Still heated with wood) and also the barrels for the aging of the rum come from the same area, made with Limousin oak (ex- cognac in short).
Almost unique feature of Haiti is that rum is produced here with virgin sugar cane juice instead of molasses and this practice will remain unchanged until the second half of the 20th century.
Duprè used the Charentaise method of double distillation, at that time reserved only for the greatest Cognacs, to obtain a unique product and immediately the Rhum Barbancourt obtained countless medals and awards all over the world, making it one of the most awarded distillates ever.
The Rhum Barbancourt produced on the Island of Haiti is one of those brands that have been present on the Italian market for decades. Haiti was in 700 the most important producer of Sugar (and Rum) as regards the areas of French influence.
It was in 1977 that the famous "EnoGastronaut" Luigi Veronelli, fascinated by the quality of the Rhum Barbancourt tasted in Italy, went to the island to visit the Distillery. During that trip, in which some tell he seems to have also been fascinated by the local Creole beauties, he is granted the privilege of selecting some of the oldest barrels present in the cellars, a task that he takes very seriously. Immediately with those few barrels a Special Limited Edition of just 1196 bottles is produced, which will be given its name, Reserve Veronelli, made of rum aged for a minimum of 25 years.
In 1949 the Distillery was modernized and rebuilt, expanding the production that led it to be present in the most important markets of the time.
To date, Rhum Barbancourt is no longer made from the virgin juice of freshly harvested / squeezed cane, but from a kind of sugar cane syrup / concentrate, while the fermentation process lasts about 3 days. Since 1990 the rum is no longer produced with the old Charentaise alembic but rather with a more modern column distillation system that produces a 92% spirit.
