A huge nature reserve, with a deer population of about 3,500, against about 200 inhabitants, occupies almost the entire island and is accessible only with specialized guides.
The only road that connects the landing of the small ferry that shuttles to Port Askaig leads after a few miles to the beautiful bay where the Jura distillery is located.
In Scotland, off the west coast, there is a remote island called Jura in Gaelic, which means 'deer'.
While there are more than 5,000 deer on the three mountains of the island, the inhabitants barely exceed 170; even George Orwell spent the last years of his life here, on the solitary farm of Barnhill, finishing his famous novel 1984.
The only town present in Jura is called Craighouse: it is made up of a road, a pub, a shop, a community and, of course, a distillery.
The current Jura Distillery is located near a large water wheel: it was built in 1963 on the ruins of an old and previous distillery, in operation throughout the 19th century.
The building was renovated thanks to two real estate developers, a builder and financing from the Scottish & Newcastle bank, with the aim of producing a delicate and slightly peaty whisky, similar to that of the Highlands, very different and better than the phenolic spirit that was drunk at the time in the Scottish islands.
In 1974 the first bottle of “Isle of Jura Pure Malt 10 years old” appeared, still produced under the name “Origin”, and in just a few years, thanks to an extraordinary success, production doubled, with the construction of new very large, slim and elegant stills, which became typical of the island of Jura.
Having reached the point of producing 2.5 million litres of whisky per year, the distillery has been enjoying a successful collaboration with world-famous Master Blender Richard Paterson since 1995.
Jura whiskies are gold or mahogany in colour, with strong flavours of honey or spices and unmissable hints of peat.
Always of great value, depending on the product, they can be strong and full of character (as tradition dictates), or sweet and delicate (the most modern productions).
After ageing for at least 10 years, enveloped in gentle sea breezes and a humid and temperate climate, the whisky that bears the name of the Jura Distillery is a golden nectar capable of expressing the finest and most refined sensations on the palate, an unmissable product for all enthusiasts and lovers of great Scottish whisky.
