Michter's Distillery is an American distillery with a rich and complex history, known for producing high-quality whiskey.
History and Origins:
Founding: The distillery traces its roots back to 1753, when John Shenk, a Swiss Mennonite farmer, founded a rye whiskey distillery in Pennsylvania.
Name Evolution: Over the years, the distillery has changed its name several times. The current name "Michter's" comes from combining the names of a previous owner's sons, Michael and Peter.
Move to Kentucky: In 1990, Joseph J. Magliocco acquired the distillery and moved production to Louisville, in the heart of Kentucky's bourbon region.
Production and Philosophy:
Quality First: Michter's is known for its focus on quality, with a careful selection of raw materials and a meticulous distillation process.
Aging: Aging is a key element in Michter's production. The distillery uses toasted American oak barrels and pays close attention to temperature control during the maturation process.
Whiskey Varieties: Michter's produces a range of whiskeys, including bourbon, rye, and sour mash, each with unique characteristics.
Awards:
Michter's has received numerous awards for the quality of its whiskeys, including the title of "World's Most Admired Whiskey."
Current Locations:
Michter's operations now span two additional sites in Kentucky. In Springfield, Michter's grows grain on a 205-acre (about 82 hectares) property, and has a second distillery in downtown Louisville, in the historic Fort Nelson Building.
