Fonseca Guimaraens the oldest producers of Portuguese fortified wine Port, Luxury experience in the World of Port

The history of Fonseca begins in 1815, with the Fonsecas and Monteiros, the original founders of the company. Then came the Guimaraens family who led it for over a century". And finally the Yeatmans and their descendants, who successfully led the company in the second half of the 20th century and into the new millennium.

The vineyards of the Douro Valley are located on steep, rugged terrain, decidedly inhospitable to man, but are the perfect element for growing vines and especially for the over 100 native varieties authorised for the production of Port.

The subsoil is mainly composed of schist and a small part of granite rock outcrops, which is still blasted with dynamite today to make room for the terraces where the Barnatelle grapes will be planted.

The main varieties are: Turiga National, Turiga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Cao, Tinta Baroca.

The harvest is done entirely by hand around the first days of September, the grapes are transported in small boxes towards the quintas.

Since the emergence of Vintage Port as a great classic wine in the first half of the 19th century, Fonseca was one of its most admired and consistent producers.

The release of the legendary 1840, the first Vintage Port sold under the Fonseca name, marked the beginning of a steady stream of magnificent vintages that continues to this day. It has included icons such as the Fonseca 1868 and the extraordinary 1927, 1948, 1977 and 1994, all four 100-point wines.

Production method

Port is first made like a normal red wine, with a high fermentation temperature, which gives the wine a lot of structure, its characteristic chocolatey flavour and a fairly low acidity.

The wine is then placed in a barrel filled one-quarter full of brandy: this clear and flavourless grape alcohol increases the alcohol level of the Port, which reaches 18-20 degrees.
