The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is an estate in Burgundy (France), which produces white and red wine.
In 1232, the Abbey of Saint Vivant in Vosne purchased 1.8 hectares of vineyards. In 1631 the vineyard was bought by the de Croonembourg family, who renamed it Romanée because in ancient times it belonged to the Prefect of Rome. In the same period the Croonembourg bought the adjacent vineyards of La Tâche.
In 1760, when André de Croonembourg decided to sell the land, a diatribe was unleashed between the two bidders Madame de Pompadour, lover of King Louis XV of France, and his bitter enemy Louis François I de Borbone-Conti. The prince had won it and the vineyard became known as Romanée-Conti. Following the French Revolution, the prince's land was seized and auctioned off.
In 1819 the Romanée-Conti vineyard was bought by Nicolas Defer de la Nouerre, who sold it to Julien Ouvrard for 78,000 francs. In 1869 Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet bought it together with other companies such as Echézeaux, Grands Echézeaux and Richebourg.
In 1891 the 9.43 hectares of the Romanée Saint-Vivant were bought by Nicolas-Joseph Marey, son-in-law of the surveyor Gaspard Monge. In 1898, the Marey-Monge family ceded part of their company to the Latour family, renting the remaining 5.28 hectares of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1966 and finally selling them in 1988. This last operation was financed by the sale and rental of the Domaine properties in Echézeaux and Grands Echézeaux.
To cultivate the Romanée-Conti and Le Montrachet vineyards, the horses were reintroduced in order to avoid soil compaction with the use of tractors. The yields are very low, with an average of 25 hl / ha (the yield of a Grand Cru is usually 35 hl / ha). In other words, three vines are needed to produce a bottle of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Yields are reduced through pruning at the beginning of the season, and green pruning in July and August.
A cleaning is carried out also immediately before harvest to eliminate the bunches below the standards. At the time of harvest, the bunches are sorted into small baskets to be examined individually.
