Sea Foam Pipes
Meerschaum pipes are jewels handcrafted in Türkiye.
Sepiolite, a hydrated phyllosilicate of magnesium, is in turn known as "sea foam" due to the fact that it can be found floating on the waters of the Black Sea, so much so that it was once believed to be solidified sea foam
Around 1870, over two hundred companies located in the Austrian capital produced hydrated magnesium silicate pipes and the term "Vienna foam" was coined to indicate these jewels for pipe tobacco smokers!
A Meerschaum pipe is a pipe made of sepiolite, a mineral often also called "meerschaum". The name derives from the German word "Meerschaum", which means "sea foam", and sometimes even in Italian these pipes are referred to as meerschaum pipes.
The first known use of sepiolite for the manufacture of pipes dates back to 1723.
That year, the Hungarian baron Andrássy, returning from a trip to Turkey, brought home two pieces of sepiolite which he then gave to his shoemaker, a certain Karl Kovacs, who was also a skilled carver, so that he could create some sculptures and these he made a pipe for the baron, believing that such a porous material was perfect for the purpose.
Kovacs' idea was successful and soon the shoemaker became almost entirely busy producing sepiolite pipes, which soon became very popular with smokers, since, thanks to their porosity, humidity and tobacco tar impregnate the mineral and therefore a fresh, dry and aromatic smoke is obtained.
Foam pipes have won over many smokers because they smoke neutrally, that is, they allow the tobacco to retain its aroma.
Elegant smooth meerschaum hand-carved pipes that smoke cool and dry.
