The best craftsman of pipe, the pipe Mastro de Paja is a jewel of high quality that can not be missed in any collection.
In 1972 Giancarlo Guidi, after spending a period as a hobbyist in the production of pipes, decides to officially found a production laboratory called Mastro de Paja.
Mastro: obviously as a master craftsman, De Paja: derives from the name with which he was affectionately called by his friends "Pajetta" because of his curly hair and translated into a dialect expression "de Paja".
Thus the artisanal pipe manufacturing Mastro de Paja was born.
He was joined shortly after by Spadoni Giannino, at the time a representative and among the products he sold there were also pipes. A professional marriage that immediately proved to be perfect, in a short time the new company "MASTRO DE PAJA di Guidi e Spadoni" immediately became one of the most esteemed pipe manufacturers in Italy for the quality of production and for the lines that for those times were innovative, fascinating and even if rough immediately met the approval of enthusiasts and collectors.
Unfortunately, the professional marriage between Guidi and Spadoni, due to disagreements and different visions on strategies, ended in 1981.
Guidi left the company to found his own. Spadoni remained in Mastro de Paja, which in the meantime had become a real company with a production staff.
Unfortunately, after a very short time, due to economic and financial problems that put at risk the possibility of continuing the business, Spadoni was forced to ask for help and found it with the intervention of the entrepreneur from Pesaro Terenzio Cecchini who, although burdened by his multiple industrial activities, saw in Mastro de Paja a valid expression of high craftsmanship and took over the majority shareholding and the position of director.
Shortly after, Spadoni also decided to leave (and to create his own new company), Cecchini then set his sights on a very capable young man who he believed was capable of giving new life to Mastro de Paja which, in the meantime, inevitably presented some production and commercial problems. That young man is called Alberto Montini and thus, at the age of thirty, he begins his beautiful adventure in the world of pipes.
Alberto Montini is the creator behind Mastro de Paja pipes. With over 50 years of dedication to this Italian brand, he has transformed his passion into an art.
Mastro de Paja pipes are true works of art, expertly handcrafted with high-quality briar, aesthetically classic, perfect, well-balanced and they smoke very well.
Montini's mission has always been the same: to shape beauty in every single creation.
Alberto embodies excellence in the creation of beautiful things, and his commitment is reflected in every detail of Mastro de Paja pipes.
The Pesaro brand can boast countless testimonials among its customers. Montini wanted to dedicate a series to some of them: "Il C.T." to Enzo Bearzot, "The President" to Sandro Pertini, "Maestro" to Luciano Pavarotti, just to name the most recent ones in half a century of history.
Pertini took a trip to Pesaro to visit Benelli. He had lunch with the workers and, after lunch, disappeared, no one found him.
At the time we had the laboratory in Montecchio, a hamlet of Pesaro, to reach it there were several traffic lights. At each traffic light there were the police, the carabinieri and the municipal police who controlled the whole situation.
Pertini decided to spend half a day at Mastro to have a pipe made... and in Stella, in the province of Savona, Pertini's hometown, there is a statue depicting him with that very pipe...
You cannot understand Mastro de Paja's work or production without considering Montini's artistic and cultural education: attention to the history of the pipe, to classicism, to innovation, to the same connections between different expressions of art has always characterized his work.
Another element is the technical-artistic mastery in the processing of different materials. First of all, briar, from which the Maestro demanded the best, using only Extra Extra quality plateaux, inventing exclusive treatments for care and seasoning, adapting the shape to the progression of the grain, doing everything to highlight it as best as possible.
The long and extraordinary history from the log to the match. From the "Erica Arborea", a plant widespread in many areas of the Mediterranean area, we obtain the briar used for the processing of pipes.
After careful research, Mastro de Paja chooses the best Mediterranean briars for its pipes.
Subsequently, only the most prestigious and most resistant ones are selected for processing and seasoned naturally, that is, for very long periods, ranging from five to seven years, so that they lose every trace of humidity.
The subsequent phases, the squaring of the briar blocks, the design, the creation of the holes in the chimney and in the stem, the insertion of the mouthpiece, the modelling, the setting of the band, the finishing and curvature of the mouthpiece, require the skills of
