S.T. Dupont is a French manufacturing company based in Paris, which has been producing luxury goods since its founding in 1872.
Products marketed include bags, lighters, collectible pens, perfumes (produced under license by Interparfums), cigarettes (produced by Philip Morris International), and recently other gadgets using the distinctive diamond head motif.
The S.T. company Dupont was founded in 1872, in the Parisian laboratory of Simon Tissot Dupont, hence the initials “S.T.”. The origins of Simon Tissot Dupont date back to the emigration from Savoy which occurred in the second half of the 19th century.
Simon Tissot Dupont initially created a carriage company which disappeared following a fire. He subsequently purchased a workshop for the manufacture of quality document holders which he made prosper. In 1919, at the age of 72, he bequeathed his company to his two sons, Lucien and André. The company quickly expanded and hired 250 people. In 1923 the brothers decided to found a production factory in Faverges, which already had an industrial fabric made up of the Lyonnais silk mills and the Swiss company Stäubli.
Due to the crisis of 1929, and following a trip to New York, Lucien decided to orient the company towards the production of luxury products intended for the international "Gotha". The quality of the products proved to be successful, thanks above all to the use of Chinese lacquer. During the war, as there were fewer buyers of toiletries, André suggested the idea of manufacturing petrol lighters. The patent was filed in 1941 in Annecy. At the end of the war, taking into account the changes that had occurred in the travel sector, the S.T. company. Dupont oriented its production towards lighters.
The prestige of the brand increased on the occasion of the wedding of Princess Elizabeth of England in 1947, when the President of the French Republic Vincent Auriol offered her a travel case signed S.T. Dupont. In 1952 the company launched a new gas lighter.
In 1966 the first adjustable Dupont lighter was released.
In 1973, with the aim of expanding its product range, it manufactured the first fountain pen, with the name "Classique". To promote the offering, the company opened its first Parisian boutique on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in 1980. In 1987, a second opened on Avenue Montaigne, followed by a third on Rue Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
Other boutiques were then opened all over the world (Hong Kong, Milan, Moscow, Monaco).
The company expanded its product range to create leather goods, perfumes, men's ready-to-wear, jewelry and more.
Paris is the registered office of the S.T. company. Dupont, while the main production unit is located in Faverges.
