In fact, the tradition of this distillery dates back to 1908 when Don José Valera Blanco, a young Spanish immigrant, opened the first sugar factory of the then newly created Republic of Panama in the town of Pesé.

Factory which, in 1936, by the will of the founder's three sons, was transformed into a distillery.

Since then the Valera family has established itself as the leading spirits company in Panama.

It is from the same peninsula that the raw material, cane sugar, comes from the processing of which Abuelo Rum is born.

For aging Abuelo mainly uses 200 liter American Oak barrels, entrusting the last part of the work to the microclimate of Panama, ideal for the maturation of Rum.
