In 1964, Glenfiddich rewrites the history of whiskey by releasing an 8-year-old single malt on the English market for the first time.

William Grant founded Glenfiddich in 1886. Father of 7 children, he was first an accountant and then manager of Mortlach as well as a choirmaster of the Free Church of Dufftown.

After 16 years of savings and work, also helped by his children and his two wives, he built the distillery by hand, stone by stone.

The distillery's first equipment was purchased for £ 120 from Cardhu; a pair of used stills, a wash tun set, a worm tub and a noria.

The water came from the Robbie Dubh Spring. It was Christmas day in 1887 when the first distillate came out of the stills.

Grant immediately began to supply large Aberdeen blenders (thanks also to the Glenlivet fire and therefore to the scarcity of Speyside malts), and then developed his own brands, including the "Stand Fast" (the battle cry of the Grant clan ).

In 1923, upon William Grant's death, his blends were sold from Australia to Canada and thrived in the postwar whiskey boom.

In 1964, Glenfiddich rewrites the history of whiskey by releasing an 8-year-old single malt on the English market for the first time.

The beginning was uncertain because few knew the name and the product, but when the Glenfiddich began to receive the attention of the newspapers and the media with the publication of various articles and with the explanation of how this "new" single malt whiskey was produced the phenomenon exploded.

In 1970 UK sales exceeded 24,000 cases and just 4 years later the value had risen to 120,000.

Thanks to this and to the other single malts produced and also to the particular triangular bottle, Glenfiddich today has a predominant position in the whiskey market.

In 1969 the Glenfiddich was the first distillery to open a visitor center and if you pass through Dufftown today do not miss to visit it, the tour will make you fully enter into the history and tradition of this excellent distillate and of course, at the end of the tour, there is the tasting of their best whiskeys.

Curiosity: Glenfiddich in Gaelic means the "valley of the deer", its whiskeys are single malts produced with the classic method and with a mild character much appreciated by enthusiasts, but the distillery also produces spirits with different processes and finishes.

Glenfiddich 15 Years Old: For this whiskey Glenfiddich adopts a special aging method called Solera System.

This process leads the distillate to mature in 3 different types of barrels.

First, European oak barrels are used, then American oak barrels and finally the last seasoning is done in the "Grande Botte", that is a barrel about 3 meters high handmade with European oak wood.

To complete the whole, the distillate is left to rest in small Portuguese oak barrels for finishing before bottling.
